Session Title: Developments in Alternatives Assessment Methods

Submission Deadline: August 31, 2018 (11:59 PM EST)

Call for Abstracts

The establishment of alternatives assessment as a practical tool for informed chemical substitution and design is gaining momentum through the activities of multiple stakeholders including governmental policymakers, businesses, and technical researchers. In keeping with this year’s theme “Building the Field,” the Coordinating Committee for the International Symposium on Alternatives Assessment is seeking abstracts for a dedicated session on Developments in Alternatives Assessment Methods as well as a poster session and networking reception. The Committee is calling for high-quality presentations and posters related to research, implementation, and evaluation activities that focus on alternatives assessment and informed substitution as an emerging scientific discipline.

The Symposium session will be divided into four breakout sections, each with three presentations (12-15 minutes) and facilitated discussion, covering the following components of alternatives assessment. Specific areas of interest are included for each component.

  • Hazard Assessment
    • Applying high throughput data and integrating data types in alternatives assessment
    • Addressing ecological toxicity
    • Undertaking chemical mixtures
    • Focusing on data gaps
    • Addressing chemical to non-chemical comparisons (materials, products)
  • Comparative Exposure Assessment
    • Using high throughput data and novel data streams to predict potential exposures
    • Simple exposure models and comparative tools and their integration in alternatives assessment
  • Decision-analysis
    • Decision theory in the context of alternatives assessment
    • Application of decision-analysis tools in alternatives assessment
    • Addressing transparency
  • Consideration of life cycle impacts
    • Integration of lifecycle considerations into alternatives assessment
    • Life cycle costing analysis

We are also seeking abstracts focused on expanding the field of alternatives assessment, including topics such as scope, performance evaluations and socio-economic assessment.

Abstracts for the evening poster session and networking reception can focus on the above components of alternatives assessment or other research or implementation activities related to alternatives assessment and informed substitution.

Submission Guidelines

In keeping with the multi-disciplinary nature of the field, the Committee is seeking a diverse set of perspectives including academia, industry, NGO’s, and regulatory decision-makers. Presenters are encouraged to submit multiple abstracts. Submitters may choose their preferred format (platform, poster, or both), pending Committee approval. Although space for platform presentations is limited, the Committee may invite platform abstracts to present in the poster session.

Deadline for submission: August 31, 2018 (11:59 PM EST). Abstracts should be submitted online.

The abstracts will be selected for platform or poster presentations and authors will be notified by mid-September 2018 based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to chemical alternatives assessment must be clearly stated
  • Relevance to the Symposium theme and/or Symposium objectives
  • Contains detailed information to demonstrate high-quality science
  • Research is novel and has not been previously published or presented
  • Abstract does not promote products or services. (See opportunities for Exhibitors)
  • Limit of 2500 characters (including spaces) for the text of the abstract (not including title, authors, and author affiliations)
  • Presenters agree to follow code of conduct similar to other scientific organizations such as Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and Society of Toxicology (SOT). The Committee reserves the right to discontinue or cancel any presentation that is in violation of the code of conduct.
