Policy Director, Healthy Building Network
Tom Lent has spent over 35 years working on the health and environmental impact of buildings, materials and energy. As Policy Director, Tom develops protocols for HBN’s Pharos Project assessing the health impact of building products and their ingredients. He developed and maintains the Pharos Chemical and Material Library cataloging health hazards for over 34,000 substances. He participated in the development of the Health Product Declaration standard (HPD) and the GreenScreen and has coordinated harmonization efforts to align Pharos, the HPD, GreenScreen, Cradle to Cradle to Cradle and Living Future. Tom was lead author on the recent white paper “Toward Safer Products: Accelerating Change with a Chemical Hazard Data Commons” defining a vision for organizing global chemical hazard information. He has also co-coordinated development of many other building standards including the Green Guide for Health Care (GGHC), US Green Building Council's LEED for Healthcare and the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative's Sustainable Bioplastic Guidelines.
